Visit Us

Through Our Eyes is an Exhibition about 16 children and young people who survived Nazi persecution across Europe in the 1930s and 1940s. They came to the north of England as refugees or survivors of the Holocaust, settled and made new lives here.
The Centre and the Exhibition is currently closed following government guidance. When we reopen, we encourage all visitors to book online in advance to help us keep everyone safe.

Through Our Eyes
Through Our Eyes is an interactive, multi-media exhibition. Visitors will see poignant personal photos of the survivors and their families and their original artefacts and documents, together with an original prisoner uniform and other artefacts from the concentration camps at Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora. The survivors tell their stories of discrimination, persecution, escape, hiding, ghettos, forced labour, concentration camps and liberation through filmed testimony on six interactive touchscreens. Text and images put their experiences in context, supported by animated maps and an immersive audio-visual experience driven by survivor testimony. There is a reflective space at the end of the exhibition where visitors can find out about the survivors’ experiences of rebuilding their lives in the UK and explore a digital memorial to local families.
The exhibition contains photographs and video footage of concentration camps and atrocities that some visitors may find disturbing. The exhibition is suitable for children and teenagers learning about the Holocaust in more detail, but not suitable for very young children.

Exhibition opening hours
The Holocaust Exhibition & Learning Centre is currently closed. When we reopen, our opening hours will be 10am-4pm.
Most visitors spend about 1hour in the Exhibition, but if engaging with our touchscreens and viewing more content it is possible to spend longer.
We’ll update our website regularly with further information. In the meantime, please email us or talk to us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. You can also sign up to our monthly e-newsletter at the bottom of our homepage.

Book to visit us
We aren’t currently taking bookings for the general public. We are continually reviewing government guidance and will be reopening as soon as we can – and we will still be free to visit.
When we reopen we will be encouraging visitors to book online via our Eventbrite page so we know how many people we’re expecting and can ensure the Centre is fully safe to visit.

Conferencing
We have a conference space available to book, with a breakout space and full catering service available. Conference delegates have exclusive use of the Through Our Eyes exhibition.
The conference space is currently closed until further notice, however we’d be happy to talk to you about future requirements.
Group visits
If you’d like to plan a future visit for a group of 15 or more people, please call or email us to discuss your needs, including any ‘bubbles’ or grouping in place. If government guidance changes we are happy to offer something digitally or reschedule your booking at no extra cost. For capacity reasons, if you arrive without booking we cannot guarantee that we will be able to accommodate you within the exhibition.

Anyone requiring level access and the lift needs to book online with us, and on arrival on campus collect a visitor pass from University Reception. This is because the Schwann Building is only accessible to passholders, to limit risk. Please call or email us if you have any questions.
Use of the toilets is limited solely to Exhibition visitors due to our safety measures. All toilets are currently fitted with paper hand towels, and the hand dryers are turned off to limit circulation of air particles.
