Introduction to Survivor Stories
Each Holocaust survivor has a unique and individual story. In this section you can find out about some of our members, read their stories and watch short films of them describing their experiences in person. Their recollections include life in the ghettos, the experience of being a slave labourer, surviving concentration camps, life in hiding, and what it what like to arrive in the UK as a refugee.

Survivor Stories
Eugene Black
Eugene was transported to Auschwitz in 1944. He survived several Nazi slave labour camps.
Iby Knill
Iby worked for the Resistance in Hungary. She was sent to Auschwitz as a political prisoner.
Trude Silman
Trude grew up in Bratislava. In 1939, aged 9, she escaped to England by train.
Heinz Skyte
Heinz grew up in the heart of Nazi Germany. His family escaped to England days before war broke out.
Val Ginsburg
Val survived Kaunas ghetto and Dachau labour camp. He and wife Ibi moved to England for a new life.
Leisel Carter
Leisel escaped Germany via Norway aged just 4. Years later, she traced her Norwegian foster family.
Ibi Ginsburg
Ibi was transported from her home in Hungary to Auschwitz concentration camp in 1944.
Margaret Kagan
Margaret escaped the Kaunas ghetto. She went into hiding, helped by friends, until the war ended.
